N-F boys post comeback win over Poky

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

Newell-Fonda's boys basketball team improved to 7-5 on the year Saturday with a 63-61 non-conference win over Pocahontas Area.

The Indians went on a 13-0 run late in the first half to go up 20-13. The Mustangs were able to pull within eight by halftime.

N-F then used an 11-4 third-quarter run to pull within one point, at 43-42. A 3-point bucket by Nathan Schumann and a pair of 2-point baskets by Evan Franzmeier and Luke Sarchet helped fuel the run.

"This was a big measuring stick check for our team," said N-F coach Paul Loos, whose team hosts Pomeroy-Palmer tonight. "I was proud of how we fought back to get into the game and how we played in the closing moments."

Four Mustangs - Jack Reis (14 points), Franzmeier (11), Schumann (10) and Brad Anderson (10) - hit double figures in the winning cause.

The Mustangs held a 36-24 rebounding edge. Robert Devereaux grabbed 10, while Sarchet snared eight and Anderson seven.

Nathan Reichter, Franzmeier and Reis all dished off three assists.

Both teams made 10 turnovers.
