Cyclones dig in on defensive end

Monday, January 7, 2008

SIOUX RAPIDS - Alta coach Bart Smith told his team they had better come out with defensive intensity Friday.

They did, and the result was a 48-22 Northwest Conference road win for the Class 1A No. 1-ranked Cyclones over Sioux Central.

Alta improved to 8-0 both overall and in the league. The Rebels fell to 4-6, 4-4.

The Cyclones led 16-3 after the first period, 30-9 at halftime and 42-17 going into the final frame.

"We always tell them you're not always gonna be real good offensively but defensively you have to come out every night," Smith said. "We didn't do a real good job executing in the seocnd half. We had too many turnovers. We need to take care of the ball and come with the same intensity and not let up."

Aaron Hansen was the only Cyclone to score in double figures as he had 10 points.

Scott Radke and Quentin Thomas both had nine, Cody Nesbitt seven, Austin Stille six, Chris Schmitz five, Mike Huseman two, and Jordan Hinkeldey and Robert Maharry one apiece.

"Our bench play was really good. Radke and Stille and Thomas played really good off the bench for us tonight," said Smith.

The Cyclones hit 12-of-17 free throw attempts.

Stille snatched seven rebounds to lead Alta in that category. Hinkeldey and Thomas both added five.

Radke and Nesbitt both tallied four steals, while Hinkeldey, Thomas and Huseman charted three each.
