The Newell-Fonda boys used an explosive second quarter, outscoring the St. Mary's Panthers 23-7 to put them up 37-18 at the break, and never looked back en route to a 56-43 victory at St. Mary's Friday.
According to Panthers assistant coach Nick Landgraf, the Panthers started out the first quarter hitting their shots and working the ball inside well. In the second quarter, however, they only made one field goal, allowing the Mustangs to pull away.
"We were only 10-27 on free throw shooting on the night, and that also really hurt us," commented Landgraf.
The Panthers were led by Ryan Drey with 11 points, Jon Foell with 10, and Michael Ivey and Connor Richardson with six apiece.
With the loss, the Panthers drop to 1-10 overall and 0-8 in the Northwest Conference, while N-F improves to 6-5 overall and 5-3 in the league.
Jack Reis led N-F with 13 points, while Nathan Schumann had 11, and Luke Sarchet and Brad Anderson scored 10 each.
