North Central (Ill.) outscored Buena Vista 22-11 over the final 12 minutes of the second half on Saturday, en route to a commanding 64-49 women's basketball victory over the Beavers. The game was the consolation matchup of the Southwestern University Tournament.
North Central used a 15-of-26 shooting effort from the field in the first half to build a 5-point lead (33-28) at the half. BVU was held to 45.5 percent shooting in the opening stanza, but did connect on 6-of-7 free-throw attempts.
The second half was a struggle offensively for both teams as each was held to under 38 percent shooting. North Central, however, won the battle at the charity stripe, connecting on 10-of-13 attempts, while BVU went 1-of-5.
Katie Ebel pulled Buena Vista to within three to begin the second half, but that was as close as the team could get the remainder of the afternoon. North Central extended its lead to 10 nearly 4 minutes into the half. BVU hung tough, trailing by only six with 12 minutes left, before North Central went on its run to secure its fifth win of the season.
Ebel went 7-of-13 from the field and finished with a team-high 15 points for the Beavers. Margo Muhlbauer and Jocelyn Kock followed with eight points apiece. Ebel also hauled in a team-best six rebounds, while Jenn Schweitzberger chipped in with four steals.
Brianne Parra turned in a game-high 20 points on 8-of-8 shooting to lead North Central. Barb Williams finished one steal shy of triple-double, scoring 13 points, grabbing 11 boards, and recording nine steals.
Buena Vista, which dipped to 5-5 on the year, will return home tonight for a non-conference battle against Dordt College. Tip-off inside of Siebens Fieldhouse is scheduled for 7 p.m.
