Cyclones slam St. Mary's, now face co-league leader Laurens-Marathon

Thursday, December 20, 2007

First-quarter margins don't get much more lopsided than this: 1A top-ranked Alta outscored Storm Lake St. Mary's 35-3 over the first 8 minutes Tuesday of an 84-28 Northwest Conference win.

Mike Huseman scored 15 points and Austin Stille and Jordan Hinkeldey dumped in 10 apiece to lead the way.

"Our pressure got to them at the beginning of the game. The guys are playing well together. Offensively, we're taking good shots and making good decisions when we push the ball," Cyclones coach Bart Smith said. "We had eight guys with eight or more points tonight. They are playing well together and being unselfish."

Aaron Hansen and Hinkeldey ripped seven and five boards, respectively, in the winning cause. Alex Peterson doled out three assists.

For St. Mary's, freshman Connor Richardson led the way with 11 points.

Evan Smith chipped in six rebounds and Justin Cullen two assists for the Panthers, which got out-rebounded 30-16.

"Alta has a very nice team," said Panthers coach Brad Wilkening. "They shot the ball extremely well, and defensively kept us out of our offense and off the boards."

St. Mary's (1-8, 0-6 Northwest Conference) hosts Schaller-Crestland tomorrow.

Alta (6-0, 6-0) hosts Laurens-Marathon tomorrow. The Chargers are also 6-0 atop the league rankings with Alta.

"Friday night will be a good test to see where we are at as a team," Smith said. "Laurens is undefeated and a lot like us."
