After trailing by as many as eight points early on, the Buena Vista women's basketball team opened its 2007-08 season with a commanding 90-70 victory over Grinnell College on Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers struggled on both ends of the court from the outset, but responded by shooting 43.6 percent from the field in the first half and took a 38-28 lead into the locker room.
BVU came out looking like a completely different team for the game's final 20 minutes, shooting a stellar 69 percent from the field, including 66.7 percent (4-of-7) from downtown.
Newell native Jenn Schumann turned in a career-high 29 points for Buena Vista to lead all scorers in the contest, missing just one shot the entire way.
Katie Ebel followed with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while Margo Muhlbauer turned in 14. Courtney Stoelk hauled in a game-high eight rebounds for BVU, which won its season opener for the first time in three years.
Hannah Wolf recorded 22 points to lead Grinnell, which shot just 29.9 percent from the field in the contest.
Buena Vista (1-0) returns to the court tonight when it opens its home schedule with a 6 p.m. matchup against Waldorf.
