Clay County Sheriff Randy Krukow said his department has located and extradited a 20-year-old Storm Lake woman who may have been "a major player for the distribution of meth in Clay County and the Spencer area."
Authorities in Bethany, Mo., came in contact with Vanessa Solis Velasquez late last week and notified the Clay County Sheriff's Office on Friday about the warrant out for her arrest. A Clay County Deputy was dispatched to the town about 20 miles south of the Iowa border Sunday and brought her back to the Spencer jail.
She is charged with conspiracy to deliver amounts in the excess of 5 grams of methamphetamine, a felony. She is being held on a $100,000 bond.
The charge stems from an October 24 incident in Spencer, when Velasquez allegedly conspired to deliver drugs.
Going though the effort to retrieve a suspect is a judgement call, according to Krukow. He said most felony charges merit the commitment.
"It really comes down to working with the county attorney's office, but this is a Class B felony so this is pretty big," Krukow said. "This is a pretty serious charge."
The sheriff said the investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected. The Clay County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, The Iowa Great Lakes Task Force, and the Spencer Police Department.
