Spencer author shares book, visits with students in SL schools
The Storm Lake Schools celebrated the start of National Children's Book Week by hosting Spencer author Amy Maurer. All the elementary children had the chance to meet her and have her new book, "A Purple Hippopotamus Pillow and Pink Penguin Sheets" read to them.
An ESL teacher at the Spencer High School, Maurer was very personable with the children.
A graduate of Spencer High School, Iowa State University and University of Northern Iowa, she served as speech therapist and Spanish teacher at a Chicago school.
She combined academic theory, research in language development and personal experience to author this first book. The story is clever and also teaches the readers a lesson about appreciating what they have and beautifully illustrated by a Colorado artist.
"Research has shown the repetition of targeted sounds increases the likliehood that correct speech will be learned.
Parents and teachers can use the "sing song" text."
The book, published by Livevest Centennial, a Christian publisher, is available at Salt and Light in Storm Lake and online at Target.com and Amazon.com
She is currently working on ideas for additional books in this series.
Maurer currently resides in Milford.
North School will be hosting a book fair this week in the library. Stop over and check out the books for sale - 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Thursday 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
