Adam Reutzel rushed for 230 yards and Travis Dietz threw for two touchdowns, as Simpson College (4-6, 3-5 IIAC) ended Buena Vista's run at four straight wins to close out the season, with a 14-3 victory on Saturday afternoon. ?The storm got on the scoreboard first when Dietz hooked up with Dillon McKelvey from five yards out at the 2:40 mark of the first quarter. ?Simpson extended its lead to 14-0 when Dietz threw his second touchdown of the contest, this one to Travis Kain from 22 yards out. ?As time expired in the first half, Jamie Daum nailed a 40-yard field goal - just his second of the season - cutting the deficit to 14-3 heading into the locker room. ?The second half was a defensive battle for both teams as neither was able to put points on the board.
The Storm fumbled the ball over to BVU on four straight possessions (three in the third and one in the fourth quarter), but the Beavers were forced to punt the ball right back each time - gaining only one first down during that stretch.
Late in the fourth quarter, Daum looked to pull BVU to within a touchdown with a field goal, but saw his 29-yard attempt blocked, securing the 11-point win for Simpson. ?After rushing for 476 yards in the last two games combined, the Beaver ground attack was held to just 100 yards rushing in the contest, led by freshman Cory Donscheski's 59 yards on 10 carries. Alex Moss followed with 42 yards on 11 carries. ?Senior quarterback Chris Hawkins became the single-season passing yardage leader in BVU history with 263 yards in the contest. He concluded his senior campaign with 2,195 yards through the air. ?Senior Randy Kaufmann was on the receiving end of eight of those completions for 83 yards. Donscheski caught four passes for 54 yards, while Trent Svendsen hauled in four catches for 41 yards. ?Ben Hansen finished with 16 tackles to lead the way defensively for BVU, and Cody Pierce turned in 14. ?Reutzel turned in the 11th-best single-game rushing performance in Simpson's history, while carrying the ball 28 times.
Dietz completed 9-of-16 passes for 125 yards, as Kain hauled in four catches for 85 yards. ?Buena Vista, which was 4-6 overall and 4-4 in the league a year ago, finished the season with a record of 5-5 overall (3-5 IIAC). The game was also the final one in a BVU uniform for 23 senior players.
