Monday, October 29, 2007

Newell-Fonda capped off another successful campaign Friday at Odebolt-Arthur with a 38-8 victory, leaving them with a 7-2 overall record and a spot in next week's playoffs.

It was the final football game of O-A existence, as the team will consolidate with Battle Creek-Ida Grove next year.

Spencer Baak got the Mustangs off to an early start with a two-yard run in the first quarter, and Josh Hopper kept the ball rolling with an 11-yard run the first play of the second quarter to put the Mustangs up 14-0.

N-F pressed their advantage in the second quarter when Hopper ran in back-to-back three-yard rushes.

Baak tallied another touchdown off a 20-yard run in the third quarter, and Josh Winkel knocked in a 32-yard field goal to wrap up the game.

N-F had 227 yards rushing on 52 plays, which included 19 first downs.

Baak led the team in rushing with 123 yards on 22 carries. Hopper followed with 17 carries for 93 yards.

Evan Franzmeier was 7-for-8 in the air for a total of 94 yards and Brad Anderson caught two passes for 21 yards.

N-F finished the regular season with a district record of 6-1, which earned them second place honors.
