This was just about how things looked to pan out on paper.
Storm Lake's boys cross country team took fourth place while the girls earned fifth Tuesday at the Lakes Conference meet on a hilly course hosted by Estherville-Lincoln Central.
"How tough is the Lakes? In boys, Spirit Lake is ranked third in the state in (Class 3A) and they got second place in the Lakes meet to Spencer!" Tornadoes coach John Brostad exclaimed. "In girls, Spirit Lake is ranked third in the state (in 3A) and Estherville is ranked fifth in the state. Ryan Edwardson (of Spencer), who won the boys meet, is ranked 10th individually in the state. Dusty Harris from Spirit Lake is ranked 22nd in the state and he was 11th (Tuesday)!"
Storm Lake junior Christine Becker earned all-Lakes Conference honors for the third year in a row as she finished 10th in 17:36 on a tough course and a windy night.
Senior Freddy Mendoza snatched all-league honors for the first time in his career by going 17:03 for fifth place.
"That is a great time and Freddy ran a smart race," Brostad said.
Paul Yak also earned all-Lakes honors, taking sixth in 17:13.
The teams were again without key injured runners in David Brady and Emily Mohr.
Eleven of the 15 all-Lakes girls and nine of the top 12 were from Spirit Lake or Estherville.
The Indians had five guys run their way to all-Lakes finishes but still lost to the Tigers, who had three all-league performers and held down the top two individual spots.
"I think we were a little tired from homecoming week and weekend but we ran well on a tough course against state caliber competition. I would say that the first three teams in boys will all be in the state meet after next Thursday: Spencer and Spirit Lake in 3A and Hull in 2A," said Brostad. "In girls, Spirit Lake and Estherville will probably be in with Spencer as contenders so the Lakes is tough. Sophomore Joanna Freking ran very well tonight and is improving each meet and we always get solid efforts from (Amanda and Lindsey Cavanaugh), Katie Matasovsky, Leslie Elizalde and Raisa Bucheli. JV runner Miriam Negrete has also performed well this season.
"The guys were solid behind Freddy and Paul as Ryan Lovstad, Geoff Ullerich, and Daren Koehler came in together 28-29-30 with Jesse Munger at 39th and Nate Tucker 41st."
Storm Lake's JV boys team took third place, with 10 of the 14 runners in the top half of the race.
"The future looks good for boys cross country," Brostad said. "I want to thank assistant coach Don Parkhurst for his great help this season as he always does a great job and thank the 13 seniors for their fine efforts: David Brady, Derek Brock, Amanda Cavanaugh, Justin Cullen, Leslie Elizalde, Daren Koehler, Ryan Lovstad, Freddy Mendoza, Maleia Miller, Jesse Munger, Adiana Najera, Nate Tucker, and Geoff Ullerich.
"These seniors are a fine and talented group."
The next meet is the district meet at the same course Oct. 18. The top 10 individuals and the top three teams will qualify to state.
"There will be many fine athletes who will not run at state due to the caliber of our district. In girls, Spirit Lake is rated third, Estherville fifth, Sioux City Heelan 10th, and Garner Hayfield is 13th plus Spencer is tough," Brostad said. "In boys, Spirit Lake is ranked third, Heelan fourth, Algona ninth, and Spencer has beaten all of them. Some mighty fine teams will stay home as well as some of the top runners in the state.
"As many coaches have said, they should take the top 10 individuals not already on a team that qualifies and these runners would be faster than the three state qualifying teams' No. 4-7 runners and many times their No. 3 runners, yet they stay home."
