The Buena Vista football team team will look to make it back-to-back wins when it faces Luther on Saturday.
The Beavers (2-3, 1-3 IIAC) will be looking for another quick start this week as Luther has scored 53 first half points in five games thus far.
The Beavers were allowing nearly 163 yards rushing per game through the first three games of the season, but are giving up just less than 109 per game the last two outings. They will have to continue that solid attack against the league's third-best rushing team this week as Luther comes in averaging 169 yards on the ground per game.
"If we can't contain the run this week, it's going to be a long day," BVU coach Jay Anderson said. "In my opinion, they have the best running back in the league. He's both big and physical."
Tyler Sherden is the back to whom Anderson is referring. For the season, he has rushed for a league-best 112.8 yards per game and six touchdowns. The consistent run attack by the Norsemen also finds them leading the league in time of possession, averaging 35:42 minutes per contest.
Senior Linebacker Cody Pierce leads the Buena Vista defensive attack, averaging 11.3 tackles per contest, which ranks him third in the conference.
Aside from running the ball, the Norse has had problems putting much together offensively as the passing game is last in the league. Despite completing 63 percent of his pass attempts, quarterback Justin Feldt has thrown for only 584 yards and two touchdowns this season, and is averaging 146 yards per game.
Marcus Hendrickson and Brandt Rost have each recorded 47 tackles this season. Rost, however, has also registered 4.5 tackles for a loss, to go along with 2.5 sacks. Cody Webb leads the team with seven tackles for a loss as Joe Taylor has tallied a team-best four sacks.
"Defensively, they are a very good tackling team," Anderson added. "They are physical and run a little bit of a different scheme than we have seen this season."
Buena Vista will look to make it back-to-back wins for the first time in 2007. Luther (2-3, 2-2 IIAC), who knocked off Loras College, 16-6 last week, comes in vying for its third straight win overall.
Kick-off inside of Carlson Stadium in Decorah is slated for 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live on 97.5FM KBVU as well as 990AM The Ticket. It can also be heard online at www.bvu.edu/athletics/broadcasts.
Game Notes: Quarterback Chris Hawkins is just 484 yards shy of the program's all-time passing record of 5,645. The Beavers haven't had a 100-plus yard rusher in a game since Chad Pearson rushed for 190 yards against Cornell in 2005 ... Chris Hawkins passed for 268 yards and three touchdowns against Luther last season as Randy Kaufmann caught five passes for a career-high 134 yards and three touchdowns ... Hawkins is three touchdown passes away from 40 in his career and is 10 away from equaling the program's all-time career record of 47 ... BVU is tops in the league on third-down conversions this season (44 percent) as Luther is third (38.7) ... Opponents are 1-for-16 on fourth down opportunities against the Beavers this season which is the best in the IIAC.
