Panther spikers show improvement at CYO Tourney Sunday

Tuesday, October 9, 2007

Panthers coach Heather Beal said she saw improved play from her volleyball team Sunday at the CYO Volleyball Tourney at Le Mars Gehlen.

St. Mary's fell to Algona Garrigan 1-2 (15-21, 23-21, 5-15), Bishop Heelan 0-2 (11-21, 7-21) and Spalding Catholic 0-2 (10-21, 16-21).

"We started the day playing Bishop Garrigan and were able to stay competitive with them. We handled the ball well and were able to make some great plays," Beal said. "We were able to serve 91 percent for the day. We struggle with timing blocks against hard hitting teams and our hitters weren't getting the sets they needed.

"The girls played hard and should be proud of their efforts today."

Erin Broich had four aces and two kills against Bishop Garrigan. Also in that match, Jen Dimig had three aces, Rylee Paterson an ace and three kills, and Annette Frank a kill.

In the Sioux City Heelan match, Frank posted an ace and two kills, with Dimig chipping in with a kill.

Paterson floored three kills to go with an ace in the Spalding contest.

Also in that match, Frank had an ace and a kill, Broich had an ace and a kill, and Robyn Bredvick served up an ace of her own.
