The Sioux Central girls cross country team placed fifth at the Laurens-Marathon Cross Country Co-ed Invite Saturday.
The Rebels were led by Jennifer Rushton with a 14th place finish in a time of 17:57. Also scoring for the Rebels were Brittny Rebhuhn, 15th, (18:07), Elise Knudtson, 24th, (19:13), Ashley Nelson, 25th, (19:16), and Sunny Patten, 32nd (19:48). Rushton and Rebhuhn both medaled. Allie Swanson and Cassie Moens also ran for the varsity team.
"The girls ran pretty well today, but we struggled a little bit with the wind and heat" said Rebels coach Chris Smith. "This was a great opportunity for us to see how we stack up for next week's conference meet, we have some work to do this week if we plan to compete for the conference title. Pocahontas is really tough this year. Hopefully, we'll have a good week and the girls will turn in their best run of the year next Saturday."
Meanwhile, Sioux Central's boys team took fourth.
Andy Saunders finished in 10th place to medal for the Rebels while turning in a season best time of 17:44.9. Will Franzmeier just missed a medal, placing 16th in 18:19.2. Rounding out the scoring for the Rebels were Andrew Lichter, 18:46.7 (22nd), Marshall Wernimont, 19:04.2 (26th), and Nelson Middendorff, 19:11.4. Also running in the 55-runner varsity race were Wesley Henningson, 19:43.1 (40th), and Trent Blomberg, 20:49.3 (49th).
"All seven of the Rebel harriers turned in season best times. A few of the guys turned in personal bests; this is a good sign of things to come as we get set for the conference and district meets," said Smith. "I am anxious to see how we perform at the meet on Tuesday in Lake City."
The Rebels will participate in the Southern Cal Invitational today and the Twin Lakes Conference Meet next Saturday in Pocahontas.
