The Mendoza Line: Two meets, two victories

Thursday, October 4, 2007

Two races. Two gold medals.

Storm Lake Homecoming King Freddy Mendoza charged 17:05 over 5 kilometers here Tuesday at the Cherokee Cross Country Invitational held at the Mental Health Institute, backing up his victorious season debut at Denison with another individual title after being declared academically eligible just a week ago.

Junior Christine Becker of St. Mary's stood out on the girls side, placing fourth in the 4-K with a time of 16:58 while keeping alive her streak of medaling in every high school race of her career.

Paul Yak of St. Mary's was the other Storm Lake varsity medalist, as he finished ninth, just 20 seconds behind Mendoza.

The Tornado squads are still without key runners David Brady and Emily Mohr due to injuries.

Brady, who hasn't run in three weeks, may miss the rest of the season.

"With him healthy, we are a legitimate state contender at the district meet Oct. 18 at Estherville, as he is worth 30-40 points for our team," said Tornadoes coach John Brostad.

Class 3A No. 3 Spirit Lake wasn't challenged as it ran away with both boys and girls team crowns and saw its girls hold down the top two individual spots.

Storm Lake's boys raced to third - 10 points behind the second-place Western Christian Wolfpack - while the girls placed fifth.

The Tornado JV boys squad had eight of its 13 runners finish in the top half of their race, with Taylor Anderson, Justin Cullen, Peter Winterton and Tor Gach all picking up medals.

In the middle school 2-mile race, which combined seventh and eight grade boys and girls, Storm Lake's Adam Ullerich and Anna Wulfekuhler led the way on the boys and girls sides, respectively.

Storm Lake now heads to the Lakes Conference gathering Oct. 9 at Estherville starting at 4:30 p.m. That's the same site and time for the Tornadoes' 3A co-ed district meet nine days later.
