Tornado boys fourth, girls eighth at Denison

Thursday, September 27, 2007

Storm Lake's most dangerous runner on the boys team is back, and he won an individual title in his first race of the season Tuesday.

Freddy Mendoza, a senior who just became academically eligible, went 15 minutes, 10 seconds for gold at the Denison Invitational on a course about 300 meters short of the standard 5-kilometer route that boys cross country teams run.

That helped the Tornado boys to fourth place out of 14 teams on night in which Storm Lake also won individual titles in the JV boys race (Nate Tucker) and middle school boys race (Adam Ullerich).

In boys varsity competition, Paul Yak was right behind Mendoza for third place. Ryan Lovstad also medaled.

"The guys had a fantastic night," said Tornadoes cross country coach John Brostad. "Had we had David Brady healthy we would have pushed Council Bluffs St. Albert for the title as missing him costs us about 40 points in the team scoring. We have hopes that he may be back for conference and districts. He has not run for two weeks."

Harlan took the girls team title. Logan-Magnolia's Carly Olson tracked 14:46 for first place in the girls race.

Storm Lake's JV boys team underscored Woodbine 38-52 for a title as Tucker ran his best race of the year in 16:42.

Nine of Storm Lake's 15 JV boys finished in the top 30 out of 117 runners.

Storm Lake's girls got eighth.

Keeping her streak of medaling in regular season meets alive was Storm Lake junior Christine Becker, who took 17th out of 79 runners (16:47) to lead the SL girls on a course that was the accurate 4-kilometer distance.

"Our team was eighth out of 10 teams, but we were again without our No. 2 runner, Emily Mohr, and that costs us aboout 30-plus points so that would have easily moved us to fifth place," Brostad said. "When we are healthy we are a very respectable team. We need to get her back for the conference and district meets."

A total of 109 boys and 79 girls competed in the varsity races Tuesday.

Storm Lake's next meet is Oct. 2 at Cherokee with the middle school race starting at 4 p.m. and the JV girls stampeding 30 minutes after that.
