Area harriers battle rain at Alta meet; SC's Rushton 3rd

Sioux Central's Jen Rushton had the best area time at the Alta Cross Country Invitational on a rainy Monday at Alta Country Club, touring the 4-kilometer course in 18 minutes flat for third place.

Alta was led by Anne Curbow on the girls side and Quentin Thomas on the boys side.

Curbow placed 15th in 19:39 for a medal, and Thomas went 18:54 in the 5K for a medal of his own as he placed ninth.

South O'Brien won the girls team title and Laurens-Marathon took the boys crown.

Following Curbow for the Cyclones were Ariel Turnquist (19th, 20:04), Nicole Connolly (20th, 20:07), Ashley Damewood (29th, 21:16), Kayla Nickolisen (31st, 21:25) and Kelsi Meyers (41st, 24:04).

Following Thomas for the Cyclones were Jordan Hinkeldey (27th, 20:49), Josh Sager (35th, 22:08), Robert Maharry (39th, 22:38), Jared Buckendahl (40th, 22:38), Brent Johnson (41st, 22:57) and Kenny Bishop (43rd, 24:44).

The Alta girls placed third.

"That is by far our best of the year," said Cyclones coach Wendell Larson. "They competed very well tonight in the rain and mud."

Sioux Central's Andy Saunders medaled with a time of 18:51. Sioux Central had three other girls medal besides Rushton: Brittny Rebhuhn (6th, 18:45), Sunny Patten (13th, 19:34) and Ashley Nelson (14th, 19:34).

Patten and Nelson ran personal best times.

There were 42 runners in the girls race and 45 in the boys race.
