Saunders, Rushton pace area harriers at H-M-S

Thursday, September 20, 2007

Sioux Central's boys placed third and its girls fifth, while Alta took sixth place in each race Monday at the Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn cross country invitational.

Forty-four girls and 46 boys competed in the varsity races.

On the boys side, Sioux Central's Andy Saunders paced area runners, touring the 5-kilometer route in 19 minutes, 38 seconds for 11th place and a medal. Central Lyon's Trev Fiedler won that race in 17:58.

Andrew Lichter also medaled for the Rebels, placing 15th.

Rebels coach Chris Smith said his team turned in some solid times despite windy conditions.

"We met some very tough teams tonight. Sioux Center and George Little Rock are very strong," he said. "Our guys ran well tonight; we improved our places throughout the race so I was happy with the way the guys performed tonight."

Running in his first meet this year, Quentin Thomas paced Alta. Thomas, who also plays football for the Cyclones, charged 20:26 for 19th place.

On the girls side, Central Lyon's Steph Wibben took the crown, going 15:41 over 4 kilometers.

Sioux Central's Jennifer Rushton led area runners, trekking 17:54 for ninth place and a medal.

Smith said it was the best team effort his girls have displayed all year.

"The girls ran their hearts out tonight," he said. "All five scoring runners broke the 20-minute barrier. Our (Nos. 2-5) were all within 15 seconds of each other while they each ran a season-best time. You have to love that kind of effort ... Jen went out and ran a great race for us tonight.

"She medaled again which is quite a feat in a race with the high caliber talent we saw tonight."

Ariel Turnquist (34th) and Anne Curbow (35th) led Alta with identical times of 20:10.
