St. Mary's picked up its first win of the season and the Alta Cyclones improved to 13-2 during a triangular volleyball meet here Monday.
Alta cruised past St. Mary's 3-0 (25-4, 25-12, 25-10) and was challenged twice in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-20) win over Aurelia.
"We got to play a lot of different girls tonight," said Alta coach Jeannie Henningsen. "I thought Geneva (Heschke), Sam (Hamer) and Haley (Payne) did a good job of coming in and showing what they can do."
In the other match, the Panthers got into the win column, beating Aurelia 3-2 (18-25, 25-20, 25-15, 20-25, 15-6).
"The girls played five tough games against Aurelia," said Panthers coach Heather Beal. "They passed the ball well and really got some great hits."
Beal said her team had a tough time digging up Alta's hits. "(We) were weak passers and had a hard time finding a good set to hit," she said.
Aurelia coach Tim Ireland said his team made too many mistakes to win.
"We need to improve our passing and serving to start putting wins on the board," Ireland said. "We need to play better mentally."
Alta's Kelsie Peterson had 11 kills to lead the way against St. Mary's. Also in that match, Jessy Bibler and Jordan Henningsen punched five and four kills, respectively.
Bridget Murillo dished out nine assists and Courtney VanHaaften spread out six. Henningsen was 26-of-28 serving while dialing up 10 service aces, with Bibler contributing seven aces of her own.
For St. Mary's, Erin Broich had an ace and Jen Dimig a kill.
Peterson hammered out 10 kills against Aurelia, with Bibler adding six. VanHaaften and Murillo posted 10 and eight assists, respectively, and Bibler and Geneva Heschke booked four digs each. Peterson was 16 of 18 serving with nine aces.
St. Mary's Camille Pickhinke contributed eight aces, six blocks and a kill in her team's cliffhanger over the Bulldogs. Also in that match, Dimig finished with two aces, five kills and eight blocks. Rylee Paterson added four kills, Broich five aces and Christine Pudenz three kills.
In stats reflecting both matches, Aurelia's Arielle Megrath floored five kills, Jodi Husman served two aces, and Shelby Dierenfield put up three blocks. Jodi Husman and Erin Husman both had four assists.
