Letters to the Pilot

Just getting started

By RANDY HARRINGTON / Storm Lake

Why not invite your long lost friends and relatives to come to the new Storm Lake?

They'll not only get to see you, but they'll also get to experience the nicest tourist area in the land.

Believe me! Get em here once and they'll be back again and again. They'll bring the kids, grandkids, and great grandkids, too! Plus, they'll be so excited, they'll tell everybody they know.

Congratulations to us all! Be proud of what we've done! and Just think, "We're just getting started."

Making a difference

By STEVE TJADEN / Lakeside

I recently had the pleasure of assisting the Alta Parent Teacher Association

write a grant request to the Buena Vista County Community Foundation.

Parents had heard from community members and teachers at the Alta Elementary

School that a fence between the parking lot and wooden Altagether Playground

would add to the safety of children at recess and while they played with parent supervision during out of school times.

The playground was conceived and paid for as a joint project between community members, the school district and city of Alta about a dozen years ago.

Volunteers and businesses donated equipment and the labor to construct the

massive fort o' fun. (If you haven't been there, it is worth the trip. Your kids or grandkids will thank you!)

The parents raised seed money for the fence by selling turkey fillets and having a Taco Bar. They approached the Alta City Council, and the Alta Board of Education and even though all three groups have tight budgets, they

ponied up matching funds for the grant request. The Alta Action Team

volunteered to administer the project.

I don't know if this project will receive funding from the BVCCF. It should, but I realize that there will be plenty of passionate problem solvers competing for these limited dollars.

That is the remarkable part of this story. Isn't it wonderful to live in a place where energized people freely donate their time and money to serve the greater good. This passion people bring to solve problems, touch lives and build community is what makes Buena Vista County and America Great.

Thank those volunteers you know, and demonstrate your social values by getting involved yourself. You, just like the Alta PTA, can make a difference in our world.
