Grace Miller, 84, died Sunday, Aug. 19, at her home in Fonda.
Services for Mrs. Miller will be held Thursday, Aug. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda. Reverend Thomas Hart will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial is in Mount Zion Cemetery in Fonda. The Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda was in charge of the arrangements.
The family will greet friends on Wednesday, Aug. 22, from 5- 8 p.m. at the Mahaney Funeral Home in Fonda, where a parish vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. that evening.
Grace Bridget Mackey was born Nov. 24, 1922, at her parents' farm home southwest of Fonda. She was the daughter of Minnie (Kapsch) and Henry Mackey. Grace spent all of her life in the Fonda area.
Grace attended grade school at a country school near her home. She graduated from Fonda Public High School. After high school, she taught four years at a country school. Then she taught at the Jolley Public School and attended classes in the summers at Buena Vista College to attain a teaching certificate.
On June 2, 1948, Grace was married to Albert Miller at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Fonda. They moved to the family farm southwest of Fonda, where they raised six children and farmed until 1978, when they retired. At that time, Grace and Albert moved into the town of Fonda.
Grace enjoyed playing cards, cooking and baking for her family and friends, and her latest passion, quilting. Her grandchildren and great-granddaughter brought special joy to her life.
Grace was a member of the Missionary Society, C.D. of A. and the Holy Family, where she volunteered her time and her many talents.
Grace is survived by her children: Ray and Denise Miller, Omaha, Neb.; Jim and Rae Miller, Fonda; Anna Wanglie, Bloomington, Minn.; Bob and Ruthann Miller, Fonda; and Eileen and John Vogel, Sioux City. She is also survived by her beloved sisters: Alice Murphy and Helen Murphy, Fonda, and Bernita Eberle, Pocahontas; She is further survived by her grandchildren: Stephanie Miller; Kendra and Tim Miller; Sarah Whitney and her husband, Doug; Andrea and Brian Garnant; Joe, Nathan and Kayla Miller; Matt, Megan Emily and Erin Vogel; one great-grandchild, Hannah Grace Whitney; as well as extended family and a host of friends.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Miller; her son, Joseph Miller; and her grandson, Benjamin Miller.
Berdell Cox, 84, Hesteria, Calif. formerly of Storm Lake passed away in the Veterans Hospital in Lom Linda, Calif on Aug. 10.
Services will be held on Friday, Aug. 24. He will be buried in the National Cemetery in California with Military Honors. Officiated by chaplain J. Goodwin. Aaron Burial Services is in charge of arrangements
Burdell was born Nov. 26, 1923 to Allen and Fern Cox in Marathon.
Berdell was a partner of Hussey and Cox and the owner and manager of the Lamplighter Motel. He was a land owner and business man in Storm Lake up until he retired.
Berdell survived by his brother, Donald Cox, Des Moines; and his sister Lois Murrey, Ida Grove. Berdell was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Rollen and Gerald and his two sisters, Francis and Karen.
