A $70,000 haircut raises scholarship funds at Upper Iowa U

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

Upper Iowa University president Dr. Alan Walker had his head shaved Friday after Upper Iowa University raised over $70,000 for student scholarships.? The money was raised by Team Peacock, the university's RAGBRAI team, who began their ride across Iowa on Sunday.

Team Peacock, who had $10,000 left to raise to meet their $70,000 goal, held a telethon-style fundraising event for two hours encouraging radio listeners and live web stream viewers to call-in and donate.

After successfully raising over $10,000 Team Peacock, joined by faculty, staff, students and others, watched as local barber Stan Woodson gave?Dr. Walker?a very expensive haircut.?

"We strive to graduate students with less debt," said Walker.? "If a shaved head raises money for scholarships that help students do that, then I'm okay with the new look."

Dr. Walker and the rest of Team Peacock leave Saturday for Rock Rapids.? This is the team's second year raising scholarship dollars on RAGBRAI.
