Chargers knocked out one game shy of state

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

It's one of the oldest cliches in all of sport, but it proved true here Monday: It's hard to beat a team three times in one season.

Laurens-Marathon's softball team had its season cut short one game before state, losing the Class 1A Region 5 final to Southeast Webster, 5-0, at Rogers Park.

L-M beat the Twin Lakes-rival Eagles 8-4 back on June 1 and 5-0 on June 18.

The No. 2-ranked Chargers, who finished the year with a 29-4 record, had won 14 straight coming in.

The No. 8-ranked Eagles, who improved to 34-8, advanced to the state tourney at the same location on Tuesday, July 31, at 6 p.m. on Diamond 1. They'll play Stanton, which beat Earlham 2-1 Monday.

Chargers senior all-stater Bryn Johnson ended her high school career with exactly 100 pitching wins.
