Backyard Bach and Blues, the annual summer fund-raiser that supports operations of the Spencer Area Arts Council facility known as Arts on Grand, will be held on Saturday, July 14 a 7 p.m. and hosted by Kitty and Neal Conover. Their home at 1215 N. Grand Avenue in Spencer is often refered to as "the Mansion on Grand."
This year's theme is "The Great Gatsby Party at the Mansion!" with musical entertainment provided by the "Party Gras Classic Jazz Band" of Des Moines, and a menu that was inspired by foods that were popular in the 1920s ( the Gatsby era), but with a contemporary twist. This year's menu will offer:
Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail in an ice sculpture by Jim Schooley
Beef Tenderloin Canapes provided by the Clay County Cattlemen
Smoked Salmon Mousse piped into celery spears
Assorted Tea Sandwiches
Layered Sushi, created by Josh Montgomery
Fresh Fruit Kabobs
"Bleu" Grapes (green grapes enrobed in bleu cheese and rolled in crushed pistachios)
Herb Cheese-stuffed Tomatoes
Jam Tarts by Cyndee Dather
Miniature Cupcakes by Kay's Kakes
New this year, limited-edition commemorative wine glasses will be available for sale. These eight ounce glasses will have an etched drawing on the mansion on them and inscribed with "BBB 2007". THey will be available for sale at Arts on Grand for $5 the week before the event and any left over will be on sale at the mansion on the night of BBB. BBB guests who purchase these wine glasses are invited to use them the night of the event instead of the standard issue plastic glasses for wine tasting.
While planning for the event is currently underway, anyone interested in helping to sell tickets, set up, decorate, donate garden flowers ( tall stems with white or pink blossoms), clean up, or do anything else, please call Arts on Grand at 712-262-4307.
Tickets for the "Great Gatsby Party" are available at Arts on Grand for $35 but are discounted to $30 for members of the Spencer Area Arts Council. They can also be purchased from Spencer Area Arts Council board members.
This year's main event sponsor is Northwest Federal Savings Bank. Proceeds from t he event will go toward the operating support of Arts on Grand, a non profit center for the arts that is home to an exhibit gallery, a gift shop with artwork by local and regional artists and studios where classes and workshops are held for people of all ages and artistic levels.
Arts on Grand is open weekdays from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. The facility is closed on Sundays and holidays.
