'Carousel' takes stage July 11

Thursday, July 5, 2007

The Buena Vista County Community Theater is preparing for the opening night of "Carousel," the Rogers and Hammerstein classic musical.

Touching on themes of love, equality and redemption, "Carousel" takes place in a coastal town in 1893 Maine. It tells the story of free spirit Billy Bigelow and his love, mill worker Julie Jordan. When Julie gets pregnant and Billy loses his job, he turns to crime in order to support his family. As a result, Julie and her child are left to fend for themselves, while Billy searches for redemption.

"Carousel" opened on Broadway in April 1945 and eventually ran for 890 performances. It was named Best Musical by the New York Drama Critics' Circle and Time Magazine selected it as the Best Musical of the 20th Century in 1999. With such favorite songs as "If I Loved You" and "You'll Never Walk Alone," Rodgers and Hammerstein often claimed "Carousel" as their personal favorite.

The cast includes several members of the popular "Touch of Broadway" musical troupe (Lisa Lindeman, Randy Ericksen, Marc Whipkey, Terry Parsons, Therese Becker, Paul Hill and Kevin Anderson).

Other cast members include Kayla Schmitz, Anita Coon, Kara Parson, Ryan Schultz, Jay Coon, Heather Beal, Collin Schultz, Casey Schultz, Coy Clark, Craig Cummins, Morgan Rauch, Shannon Schultz, Abigail Hill, Elizabeth Hill, Sierra Hill, Charlie Robbins, Nate Titus, Tom Hemmingsen. Additional chorus members are Sharon Moore, Pam Adams, Abby Freeman, Sara Carlson, Celeste Cummins, Kaylee Koster, Mallory Hinkeldey, Kayla Vetter, Mara Cantrell-Paulson, Annie Brophy, Julie Cantrell-Paulson, Cindy Barahona, Paige Carlson and Juvenal Soria.
