Tuesday, June 26, 2007

Alta's baseball team cruised to a title at its own tournament here Saturday, beating River Valley 15-3 in the first game and blanking Clay Central-Everly 9-0 for the championship.

In the other games, CC-E topped Pomeroy-Palmer 3-1 in Round 1, and RV got the consolation prize, knocking out Pomeroy by a 10-2 score.

All games lasted five innings under tourney rules.

In Alta's first game, the Cyclones put up crooked numbers, scoring two runs in the first, four in the second, five in the third and four in the fifth.

RV put up one run each in the first, third and fifth.

Senior Paul Allerdings earned the pitching win for Alta (20-6, 9-1 NWC). He threw all five innings, scattering four hits, three runs (none earned), one walk and five strikeouts.

"Paul showed great senior leadership this game. I asked him if he could give us two innings on the mound; he ended up throwing a complete game," Cyclones skipper Jerry Braunschweig said. "We came ready to play today and I think the results speak for themselves. We were aggressive on offense and dictated the tempo of the game."

Allerdings also led the way at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double.

Scott Radke had three hits, and Jack Mills and Alan Hinkeldey added two apiece.

Mills and Radke both drove in three runs; Hinkeldey and Cameron Manteufel drove home two each, and Chris Schmitz stole two bases.

"Jake threw a great game today, taking control early on and really dominating hitters," said Braunschweig. "He had lots of pop on his fastball and his control was outstanding. I'm proud of the effort our team gave.

"It's nice to win your home tournament."

Schmitz went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, a run and an RBI.
