The sails are rising for the summer of 2007, but it isn't too late for skipper wannabes to come aboard.
The HyNoon Kiwanis Community Sailing program will be offering the following programs this season:
* Youth Group Sailing Events
* Free Family Sailing
* Youth Sailing Academy
* Adult Sailing Academy
There are opportunities for the public to get involved in each segment of the program, with some classes beginning in July and openings still available.
Youth Sailing Events - Area youth groups are invited to bring a picnic or barbecue to the dock site near Sunset Park for an evening of sailing fun. Volunteer sailors, boats, life jackets and the enthusiasm are provided, free! Kids can choose to go out in a small sailboat with a local sailor, free, or in a group with a bigger sailboat. They can learn or just go along for the ride. Sailing will be from 5 p.m. until dark. Many volunteer sailors are kids that have completed the Learn to Sail classes.
Area adult sailors will be at the dock and larger sailboats. Call Rick Peterson ( home 732-5762 or work 732- 2663) at least two weeks prior to your date to arrange your event any Monday or Wednesday evening beginning Monday, July, 16 through Wednesday, August 15. The program will be videotaping many of the events.
Free Family Sailing- Family groups are also invited to bring a picnic or barbecue to the dock site for an evening of sailing fun. Family members can choose to go out in a small sailboat one on one with a volunteer sailor or as a group in a bigger sailboat. (Call 732-5762 or 732-2663) at least two weeks prior to your date. These events can be scheduled Monday, July 16 through Wednesday, August 15 (depending on the weather).
Youth US Sailing Course - available for $100 per student (donation to Kiwanis.) Courses will be held: Course one is 8:30 a.m.- noon July 2- July 12 (no classes on July 4 or July 8. Course two is 1 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. Spots are available in both sessions. Contact the chamber of commerce to sign up, 732-3780.
Adult Sailing Course will be held July 9- July 12, cost is $100 per adult. Lessons will be held nightly 5 p.m.- 8:30 p.m Mom or Dad register and bring your son or daughter along. You both learn for the price of one.
