Head coach Jason "Moose" Stoltzfus didn't mince words.
"We got scared and cracked like an egg," Stoltzfus said after Storm Lake's 7-6, eight-inning league loss to E-LC in prep softball action here Monday. "We let this one slip through our fingers. E-LC wanted it more than we did.
"We beat ourselves."
The Tornadoes, who out-hit E-LC 10-7, dipped to 3-1 (1-1 Lakes) with the setback.
Morgan Darrow was collared with the loss, with seven hits and seven runs allowed in eight innings. Just three of those runs were earned, however, as the Tornadoes unraveled with five fielding errors.
Darrow struck out 10 and walked two. Amber Woodford boasted the team's lone extra base hit, a double.
SL jumped ahead early, scoring four in the second inning. Nicole Martin, Amber Woodford, Lindsay Guenther and Amanda Proczak all had RBIs in the inning and the Tornadoes capitalized on a pair of Midget errors.
SL led 6-3 going into the last half inning but the Midgets knotted it at 6-6 with a trio of runs to force extra innings.
After shutting Storm Lake down in the top half of eight, E-LC appeared to be having the favor returned to it. Darrow induced a groundout to third base and fanned the Midgets' third baseman for the first two outs of the inning. But E-LC's next batter singled, then scored the winning run on the latter of two ensuing SL errors.
In JV action, E-LC won 11-8. Katie Blum suffered the loss and Jamie Cords belted her first homer of the year.
