Panthers pick up season's second win Monday over S-C

Tuesday, June 5, 2007

The Storm Lake St. Mary's baseball team topped Schaller-Crestland 10-0 in five innings at home Monday.

The Panthers improved to 2-7 (1-1 Northwest Conference) with the win, scoring 10 runs on five hits.

"We came out strong in the first inning. We took advantage of some walks and hit batsmen," said St. Mary's coach Ryan Berg. "We finally had a game with no errors defensively, so that helped."

Alec Kestel earned the pitching win in three innings of work and Justin Cullen threw the final two frames.

Evan Smith went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Marco Barahona added an RBI single.

Prior to that, SLSM lost to LeMars Gehlen 13-7 in eight innings Saturday and to Algona Garrigan 11-2 Sunday.

Both games were part of the Catholic Youth Organization Tournament in Carroll.

Against Le Mars the Panthers trailed 5-0 early before scoring four runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth. Gehlen would break a 7-all tie with six runs in the eighth to win it.

Things got interesting in the sixth, when the Panthers trailed 7-4. Justin Culllen was hit by a pitch with one out. After the second out was recorded, Michael Ivey singled and T.J. Miller walked to load the bases. Tyler Netsch then delivered a two-run single to right. Miller also came around to score after a throwing error to knot the game at 7.

In the Garrigan contest, with one out in the fifth, Cullen was hit by a pitch, Miller doubled and Ivey hit a two-out, two-run single.

"We showed some guts coming from down 5-0 against a very solid Le Mars Gehlen team to force extra innings," said Berg. "Our bats came alive on Saturday and we made a lot more solid contact on the weekend as a whole. We also showed some signs of good defense on Saturday but then made too many errors on Sunday.

"We are still striving to improve little by little and hopefully find some consistency."
