Newell-Fonda's baseball team beat Maple Valley-Anthon Oto 5-4 and lost to North Sentral Kossuth 7-4 in the Newell-Fonda Tourney Saturday.
B.J. Baskerville earned the win against MV-AO, with one earned run, eight hits, no walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.
Jack Reis, Nathan Miller, Daniel Wells and Baskerville all had a hit for N-F.
"B.J. turned in another strong outing on the mound for us," said Mustangs coach Jim Miller. "Our defense let him down in the last two innings, but he was tough enough to shut them down. We didn't swing the bats real well, but we got key hits with runners in scoring position."
Against NSK, N-F notched four runs in the first inning, but NSK had three in the first, two in the second and two in the third while out-hitting N-F 12-9.
Matt Spaulding allowed seven runs, gave up 10 hits, walked two and fanned two in four innings. James Tiedeman allowed no runs, two hits, and walked one and fanned two in three innings.
The Mustangs fell to 5-4.
"This was a very good high school baseball game. North Sentral Kossuth has a great program and they are very deserving of their lofty state ranking," said Miller. "I was proud of our guys, we battled the whole game. A game like this against a quality team will only make us better as we move forward. James Tiedeman did a great job in relief as he shut them out over the last three innings."
Tyler Wells, Nathan Miller and Baskerville all had two hits for N-F. Wells plated two runs.
