Arlene (Matthews) Gerdeman, 90, Des Moines, and formerly of Sioux Rapids and Linn Grove, died Wednesday, May 9, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gerdeman was held Saturday, May 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. Burial is in Barnes Township Cemetery at Linn Grove. Visitation was held at the funeral home for one hour prior to service time. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Sioux Rapids was in charge of arrangements.
Arlene Lyons, the daughter of William and Opal (Dailey) Lyons, was born at Ruthven, on March 5, 1917. She lived her youth and received her education at Linn Grove, graduating from the Linn Grove High School.
Arlene was united in marriage to Clifford Matthews on September 16, 1939. This union was blessed with two daughters, Judy and Angela. Clifford and Arlene resided in the Sioux Rapids and Linn Grove communities, where Clifford was in the banking profession. Prior to beginning their family, Arlene had been a beautician, but after their children were born, she enjoyed being a devoted homemaker, wife, and mother. Clifford died in 1973.
Arlene later married Earl Gerdeman and during their married life time they resided in Hartley, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Des Moines. While living in Hartley, Arlene and Earl assisted with the operation of the Baumgarten Funeral Home. The past four years, Arlene has resided with her daughter, Angela, in Des Moines.
Arlene was proud to have been a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. When she was younger, she enjoyed golfing and playing cards. In recent years, Arlene kept her mind active by doing word search puzzles.
Among those left to cherish her memory are her children: Judy and Bob Petersen, Omaha, Neb.; and Angela Matthews, Des Moines; her grandchildren: Kirsten Morton, Kirk Petersen, Kory Petersen, Derek Reese, and Erin Mueller; 11 great-grandchildren; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her two husbands.

Allan H. Fitchett, 66, Storm Lake, died Saturday, May 12, at the Fonda Nursing and Rehab Center in Fonda.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 15, at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, with Pastor Connie Spitzack officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.

Allan Hale Fitchett, the son of Ivan and Charlotte (Hoch) Fitchett, was born at Storm Lake, on September 21, 1940. Throughout Allan's lifetime, he touched many people's lives, having lived in numerous communities within northwest Iowa. He had resided at the Howard Center in Sac City, Iowa and most recently had been a resident of the Fonda Nursing and Rehab Center.
Allan enjoyed walking, fishing and camping. He liked to ride horses. Allan loved to spend time on his aunts' and uncles' farms. His family was a very important part of his life and he cherished the times he could participate in family get-togethers. He will be deeply missed by his family.
Allan's life will be remembered and celebrated by his brothers: Wilbur Fitchett, Columbus, Ohio and Duane and Sandy Fitchett, Storm Lake; his step-mother, Frances Fitchett, Storm Lake; two nephews: Duane and Eric Fitchett, N.C.; two nieces: Charlotte (Barry, Jr.) Copp, Newell; Peggy Fitchett and Chad Bloyer, Galva; three aunts: Fern Crowley, Lakeside; Joyce (Don) Robbins, Alta, and Pearl Marlatt, Newell; one uncle, LeRoy Fitchett, Newell; many cousins, other family and friends.
Allan was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Raymond and several aunts and uncles.
