Ballfields project begins Wednesday

Monday, April 30, 2007

A groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of the Storm Lake High School baseball and softball fields - which are used jointly by the high school and Buena Vista University teams - will be held at the fields on May 2, starting at 3:45 p.m.

BVU is partnering with the Storm Lake Community School District on the project, with construction to begin following completion of the high school baseball/softball season later this summer.

The renovated fields will be ready for play in the 2008 season. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in the fire station.

The program will feature comments by Dr. Paul Tedesco, superintendent of the school district, and BVU President Fred Moore. BVU and Storm Lake high school student-athletes will be on hand for the event. The event is free and open to the public. At 6 p.m., the Beavers' baseball team will be playing Central College.

"We are very excited to be able to start work on this project later this year," says Dr. Tedesco. "Our collaboration with Buena Vista will allow us to create fields that are of much better quality than our high school athletes normally have the opportunity to play on. This is truly a mutually beneficial project."

"Thanks to the cooperation of the Storm Lake schools, BVU's teams have been able to play their games at the high school fields for more than 20 years," says BVU President Moore. "This project will create an inter-collegiate level facility that will have a positive impact on players and fans, as well as for the future of both the BVU and the high school athletic programs."

In May 2006, BVU and the SLCSD agreed to the joint project and to share in its cost. All of the funding was generated through campaigns conducted by BVU and the Storm Lake Booster Club.

While the primary benefits of the renovation will be improved playing conditions and safety for the student-athletes, the project is also expected to improve the chances of attracting regional NCAA Division III championships as well as Iowa high school district and regional play-offs.
