Newell-Fonda K-5 students will have the chance to see one of the fastest growing art forms in America when OPERA Iowa arrives on April 4. Des Moines Metro Opera's award-winning touring troupe will present the 40-minute opera, The Billy Goat Gruff at 2 p.m. in Newell School's old gym. A new piece for OPERA Iowa, these ornery Billy goats will charm the audience with their adventures in outwitting Osmin the Troll.
OPERA Iowa's exciting productions and workshops entertain while they educate, and make opera more understandable and more accessible to students and families. The opera is performed in English with colorful scenery and costumes, theatrical lighting, and musical accompaniment. Prior to OPERA Iowa's arrival, Mrs. Pollard received teacher packets to help prepare students for the performance. Once OPERA Iowa arrives, the troupe will work directly with the students in interactive workshops that may include improvisation, musical styles, or character development.
Character counts in life and especially in opera! OPERA Iowa offers this workshop highlighting the Six Pillars of Character Excellence: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.
