Girls golf: Returnees ready to lead varsity to next level

The Storm Lake St. Mary's girls golf team is looking forward to participating at the varsity level this season after not having the numbers to compete last spring.

Erin Broich, Ashley Miller, Christine Pudenz and Sarah Dimig return with a year of experience under their belt to lead the Panthers. They will be looked to for leadership in a squad that has four freshmen and no seniors.

"The key for us this year will be in the ability for each of the girls to continue to improve. We are somewhat inexperienced again so we are looking for improvement in many areas," said head coach Chris Reinert who is entering his third season.

As the team hits the course, they will be looking to improve their skills so they can be competitive with other teams in the Northwest Conference this spring.

Boys golf: Younger players prepare to step up

After finishing seventh in the Northwest Conference a year ago, the Storm Lake St. Mary's boys golf team is hoping to improve on that under head coach Chris Reinert who is entering his sixth season.

TJ Miller, Alec Kestel and Tyler Netsch are the returning letter winners for the Panthers. Miller is the lone senior in a group that boasts four other returning golfers from last year's squad.

"I believe we have guys who want to be a part of something successful on the golf course," said Reinert. "I think this group wants to have fun yet be competitive with each other which will improve performances during meets."

One of the main focuses for this team will be on improving its short game and trimming the excess shots per round. Another point of emphasis is improving each individual's consistency from meet to meet. The final key for this team will be how quickly the younger golfers mature in their games and the contributions they will be able to make.

"Many of the schools in the conference are returning some quality golfers so it will be up to some of the younger guys to step up," said Reinert.
