Town meeting set to create Newell community center

Tuesday, March 6, 2007

A Newell town meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, March 13th at 7 p.m., where the Newell Community Center Committee will reveal a tentative plan for a development.

The meeting will be held at the Allee Building on the upper level. The public is encouraged to come and learn more about the plans for the new large community center and remodeling of the existing Allee Building to include a fitness center. Refreshments will be served.

The Community Center Committee has a floor plan drawn up and is in the process of having a grant proposal written by Northwest Iowa Planning and Development in Spencer. Hopes are that the project could be awarded up to 50 percent of the total amount needed for the project.

A member of the committee said that the norm, however, would be for about 30 percent of the project to be funded from outside. The rest must come from other sources such as bonds, private and public donations and loans in any way possible. The application is due by April 1.

Newell Mayor Dick Christiansen said, " It will offer the people of the Newell area a place for meals and events. The Community Center will also be wheelchair accessible, which will be great. There will be a walking path and a fitness center. It is something that will be real good for the community."

Initial ideas for the Community Center include such possibilities as a reception hall, gift shop, dining area, along with the fitness area in the Allee building and more. With all the equipment needed and the cost of the building it is projected to have a cost of approximately $1.2 million.
