St. Mary's School proudly named Bob Lenhart as the 2007 Volunteer of the Year as part of the Catholic Schools week celebration - The Good News in Education.
Lenhart is a 1954 graduate of St. Mary's High School. His six children all attended St. Mary's, and he has nine grandchildren now attending St. Mary's School.
This could explain why this year's volunteer of the year is so dedicated to St. Mary's Parish and School. He has served on nearly every committee and board possible, as well as helping with special projects.
He served on St. Mary's School Board from 1977 to 1982. This alumnus and wife Francis, along with Jim and Laurie Murray, planned and chaired the first Friends of St. Mary's Ball in 1990, which continues today as St. Mary's Ball and Charity Auction.
He served as a member of the St. Mary's Finance Council from 1996-2002, serving two terms. He was also one of the first members of the St. Mary's Foundation Board.
The volunteer of the year also takes on the volunteer jobs that some find difficult - fundraising. He has helped and even chaired the St. Mary's Alumni Association Phone-A-Thon, recruiting other callers and phoning classmates to encourage contribution for St. Mary's School. He has volunteered with the annual spring phone-a-thon since 1994. Organizers will even adjust the dates of this event to ensure this alumnus will be able to help make calls.
The volunteer of the year and his wife chaired the Follow-Up committee as part of St. Mary's Church 2001 Capital Campaign, " Vision for our Future", to raise funds for the school's endowment and renovation of the church.
He was quick to say yes to help with the first calls to the new St. Mary's Business Club to help the St. Mary's Ball and Charity Auction.
Alongside Mike Pertzborn, he has co-chaired the annual Big Raffle sales for St. Mary's Ball and Charity Auction since 1999.
As his heart is always with St. Mary's, Lenhart also planned his 50th class reunion - which was a big success.
The most recent project was follow-up calls for the church renovation. Although he was knee-deep in his retirement job at Buena Vista University, he quickly agreed to the challenge. Lenhart has also helped with civic projects such as one-on-one fund-raising calls to local philanthropists for Storm Lake's Project Awaysis.
"This volunteer's tireless devotion to St. Mary's has been so crucial to the success of the growth of the St. Mary's organization. He is truly a cheerful volunteer and always follows through with what is asked of him. We are grateful for the service and the friendship of Bob Lenhart," shared Dawn Prosser.
