Wednesday night the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce and Area Development Corporation hosted the annual awards banquet at Buena Vista University.
Jim Bauer of Al's Inc. was honored as Business Person of the Year.
Faust Institute of Cosmetology received the Business Improvement of the Year honors. Plaza Mexico won Customer Service of the Year and Helen Bosley, Scrooge contest winner, was honored for Chamber Involvement.
The SLADC Awards were presented to Ranco for Facility Expansion and Economic Growth, US BioEnergy Corporation for Community Improvement and Econmic Growth, DFS, Inc. for Job Expansion and Capital Investments and Merrill Manufacturing for 50 years of economic growth in Storm Lake.
Marilyn Monson, Managing Director for the Chamber of Commerce, was excited to talk about how much Storm Lake has expanded over the year 2006 with 26 Ribbon Cuttings, 15 Business After Hours and 15 Chamber Coffees.
"A few years ago it was 'Imagine It' when plans for Storm Lake to become a tourist destination started. Then last year it was 'Believe It' and this year it is 'Experience It'," Monson said about the chamber themes. "And who is ever first going down the big orange slide I'll be there to take your picture."
Chief Operating Officer of Leisure Hotels and Resorts Greg Clark was the Keynote speaker. He said that he was enthusiastic with how the AWAYSIS project was going.
"There is amazing support for the project in this town," Clark said. "But we cannot stop that support. I have no doubt that the resort will be a success, but it will take effort from all of us to help it sustain its success."
The lodge and waterpark are scheduled to open this summer.
