Spencer will play host to the Des Moines Register's annual RAGBRAI statewide bike ride, according to an announcement Wednesday. This year's ride will begin in Rock Rapids on July 21. Spencer will be the first overnight city, on July 22. From there, the ride moves east to Humboldt on day two.
This will be the fourth time Spencer has hosted the ride in the 35 year history of the event. Through its history, RAGBRAI has visited 758 Iowa communities. It is considered the oldest, longest, and largest non-competitive bicycle tour in the world.
A survey by the Register indicates that 58 percent of adult riders are professionals. The average rider is 44 years old, 66 percent are men, 33 percent are first-time riders.
"We will be taking this
opportunity to show the world why we are one of America's best small towns," said Denise Hicks, Spencer Chamber of Commerce. RAGBRAI last came to Storm Lake in 2001. The city was considered last summer, but the decision was made to take a rain check due to Project Awaysis construction.
