At least seven people died in traffic accidents as the first major snowstorm of the season dumped six inches or more of snow in area of the state.
The storm started on Sunday. Light snow continued early Monday, but was beginning to taper off.
All the deadly accidents happened on Sunday.
The Iowa State Patrol says three people from Fort Dodge died in a 2-car collision in Boone County on Iowa Highway 17, which was covered with snow and ice. Michael Reed, 28, Andrea Reed, 24, and Isabelle Reed, 3, were killed when Michael Reed lost control of the car and slid into another vehicle. The patrol did not immediately know if the Reeds were related.
Two people died Sunday in a three-vehicle crash near Hull in northwest Iowa. Raymond Todd Katka Jr., 20, of Rock Rapids, and a passenger, 4-month-old Cody Holtrop, of Sheldon, died in the crash on U.S Highway 75.
In Cerro Gordo County in northern Iowa, Huitao Yang, 36, of College Station, Texas, died after he lost control of his vehicle on Interstate 35 and hit a concrete bridge pillar.
In Iowa County in eastern Iowa, Joseph Schwinger, 44, of Woodridge, Ill., died on I-80 in a crash that involved a second car and a semitrailer.
Many schools were either closed or delayed on Monday.
