Lawmakers will not ante up on TouchPlay debate

Tuesday, December 19, 2006

With lawmakers saying they won't revisit the debate over the defunct TouchPlay gambling machines, the issue of the machines will carry over into the New Year.

Gov.-elect Chet Culver and Democratic lawmakers said after the November election that the debate over TouchPlay was settled, but four lawsuits filed by businesses that owned and operated the machines are pending and could cost the state millions of dollars.

Iowa lawmakers approved TouchPlay gaming in 2002. The game's popularity rapidly expanded to grocery stores, bars and convenience stores, and lawmakers banned the machines last March amid criticism that TouchPlay resembled slot machines, which are only allowed in casinos.
