Every year some people make resolutions for getting in better shape or losing some weight.
Lighten Up Iowa is a team-based program designed to help Iowans make positive lifestyle changes. This year's run goes from January 10, 2007 to May 10.
In 2006 a record 33,183 participants on 4,644 teams logged over 5 million miles of activity and lost 138,873 pounds of weight statewide.
Teams of two to ten people sign up for one or both divisions: weight loss due to an appropriate diet or accumulated activity minutes.
Accumulated activity minutes will have teams track activity minutes and report monthly.
Activity minutes can range from parking at the back of the lot, walking, gardening, shoveling snow or recording your daily workout on the treadmill. Program officials are leaving it up to the team/participants to decided what activities they want to record.
In addition to activity, teams can compete for the highest weight loss with an appropriate diet can also be honored. Reports are made monthly based on total percentage of team weight lost.
Each team has a captain who will responsible for giving teammates information and reporting progress. The captain helps motivate the team to keep up their work.
Registration forms are available for printing out online, and you can pay online as well.
With the $12 paid entry fee, participants receive a training T-shirt, personal nutrition and physical activity tracking log, sponsored by Hy-Vee, free entry into the Winter Iowa Games Fitness Walk and Summer Iowa Games Volkswalk, as well as weekly nutrition and physical activity tips and chances to win monthly incentive prizes.
