UDMO upheaval raises local concerns

Monday, November 27, 2006

The termination of Upper Des Moines Opportunity executive director Nancy Schmitz has raised some concerns in Storm Lake.

Storm Lake Principal Juli Kwikkel has been attending meetings of the UDMO Board of Directors in Pocahontas. Along with the many poverty programs operated locally, UDMO obtains the grants that assist early childhood education programs such as Head Start and Shared Vision in the Storm Lake school system.

Kwikkel said that the board has not given any specific reasons for the termination of Schmitz, and described the most recent board meeting as "dysfunctional."

She said schools had collected signatures in support of the former director, but was unsure if any legal action may result. "We just do not want this to affect programming in Storm Lake," the principal said.

The UDMO board will not meet again until January, and then is expected to decide on how it will conduct a search for a new director.
