ACE students prepare for seventh annual radio program, carnival

Tuesday, November 7, 2006

Advanced Career Exploration students from Storm Lake High School will again be producing "ACE-on-AIR" Thursday, Nov. 16, from 6-8 p.m. over KAYL 101.7 FM radio. This is the seventh year for the student-produced radio show under the direction of Pegg Havens, ACE Instructor. According to Havens, students were very successful selling 30-second commercials to local businesses and collecting donations to be used as giveaways and drawings during the show. In most cases, the students wrote the commercials and recorded them at KAYL, which has donated all their services and airtime for the two-hour program. Several commercials are also in Spanish. Corporate Sponsors for this show are Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, Iowa Central Community College, Sara Lee Foods, and Tyson Fresh Meats Incorporated. These companies sponsor the live remote broadcasts directly from the high school Student Center during the radio show. Also included in the show is the Top 13 Hit List from SLHS and trivia questions with prizes for the correct call-in answers. Adriana Perez and Schelese Myott will serve as DJs for the remote breaks from the high school carnival. Student DJs at KAYL will be Rachel Rohrman, Marlen Lopez, Raven Williams, Kayla Shadlow, and Adrian Santellanes, with Jesse Halder handling the call-ins. The target audience is high school and middle school students, but the public is encouraged to listen.

The purpose of this fundraiser is to help cover the costs for Storm Lake ACE Student Leadership Training, spring competitions, and other program expenses.

High school and middle school students are invited to participate in the ACE-on-AIR Carnival at the SLHS Student Center from 6-8 p.m. As students listen to the radio show, they can participate in various games and activities organized by ACE students and purchase drinks from the Daily Grind, the espresso cart run by ACE students.

All games are free, and students will have many opportunities to win great prizes donated by area businesses.

Drinks from the espresso cart run from $1 to $3.25, with Italian Sodas being sold for only $1 during the carnival. Students will also be able to purchase slices of pizza for $1.50 and pastries from La Panaderia Las 4 Reynas for 50 cents. All Storm Lake students are encouraged to join in the fun.

The entire public is invited to listen to "ACE-on-AIR" over KAYL and participate in the trivia questions, as read by the student DJ's during the show. According to Francisco Castillo, ACE President, "We're really excited for this fundraiser, and we hope that we have a good turn-out. We want everyone to have fun and enjoy what the ACE students have to offer."
