Beavers drop IIAC finale to Dubuque

Tuesday, November 7, 2006

Jermar Jackson rushed for four touchdowns as the University of Dubuque edged Buena Vista University 27-25 in the final Iowa Conference football game of the season.

Trailing 27-19 with just over two minutes remaining in the game, Buena Vista had the ball at the Dubuque 20 yard line facing a fourth-down and 15 situation. Chris Hawkins found Randy Kaufmann in the back of the end zone as the tandem connected for their third touchdown of the day to cut the deficit to 27-25.

On the ensuing two-point conversion, Hawkins' pass fell incomplete. With no timeouts remaining, the Beavers were forced to attempt an onside kick. The Spartans recovered and ran out the clock as they defeated the Beavers for the first time since 1990.

Jackson ran for 114 yards. He also threw for 213 yards. Three of his rushing touchdowns came in the first half as Dubuque held a 21-10 halftime advantage.

Hawkins had 223 yards passing on the day. Kaufmann nabbed four receptions for 69 yards. It was the second three-touchdown game of the year for Kaufmann who now has nine touchdown grabs on the season.

Chris Rowedder led the Buena Vista rushing attack with 70 yards, 52 of which came on one carry. Chris Kemmerer had two field goals of 30 and 31-yards in length.

Cody Pierce registered a career-high 20 tackles to lead Buena Vista. The Beaver defense recorded a season-high four sacks including two by Dave Bredehoeft.

Dubuque improved to 5-4 on the year and 4-3 in the Iowa Conference. Buena Vista is now 4-5 and wrapped up league play with a 4-4 mark.
