It was a tragic weekend on the area roads.
An Arkansas man died in a one-car accident west of Newell in the early morning hours Saturday, and three area people died in a fiery crash off M54 near Dickens Sunday evening.
Buena Vista County Sheriff's officials were called to a report of a car in a field off Highway 7, east of M50, three miles west of Newell, shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday. Newell firefighters and emergency medical crew as well as the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center ambulance responded.
The driver of the vehicle, Gregorio Castillo, 38, of Pocahontas, Arkansas, had been apparently the sole occupant of the vehicle, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff's officials on Monday said they were continuing an investigation, but had no information on what had caused the incident. The Medical Examiner is assisting the investigation.
Meanwhile, the accident Sunday claimed the lives of a Spencer couple and a Ruthven man.
A Buick Regal driven by 81-year-old Leland Boblit of Ruthven was eastbound on Highway 18 when it struck the guardrail at the entrance to the bridge at Dickens. Boblit then crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming Chevy Blazer driven by 67-year old Jim McMichael of Spencer. Boblit's vehicle then caught fire.
Boblit, Jim McMichael, and McMichael's passenger, 60-year-old Donna G. McMichael of Spencer, were all fatally injured in the crash.
The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Clay County Sheriff's Office, the Palo Alto County Sheriff's Office, the Dickens Fire Department and the State Fire Marshall's Office.
