Dollars for Scholars begins campaign with a goal of $12,500
Student board members of the Storm Lake Dollars for Scholars are contacting area individuals by mail and telephone, in an effort to raise funds that will provide scholarships for the graduates of 2007 from both Storm Lake and Storm Lake St. Mary's High Schools.
For over a decade, Storm Lake Dollars for Scholars has been awarding scholarships to the college-bound seniors from its two high schools, providing them with not only financial support, but a community "pat on the back" as well. In addition, a trust fund has been established through larger gifts and memorials.
The interest from this trust fund is also used annually for scholarships. Some scholarships are fully funded by local businesses, service organizations or memorial gifts. These designated scholarships are awarded in the name of the sponsoring business, organization or person. Storm Lake Dollars for Scholars is affiliated with the Citizens' Scholarship Foundation of America, a national organization established to help raise scholarship money for high school graduates.
Every dollar raised through the local fund drive is invested in the education of young people, since Dollars for Scholars administration is entirely volunteer and every dollar raised stays in the Storm Lake community for the graduates of its two high schools.
Unlike other scholarship programs, Dollars for Scholars reaches out to more than just the top academic students. It takes into account some important intangibles - what a student has contributed to the community, church and civic groups, whether he/she has solid personal goals and how effectively those goals can be communicated, and how hard a student has worked at a job while in school.
The dollar amount of the scholarships awarded is approximately equal to the first semester's book fees for an accredited two-year or four-year college or vocational school. Keeping the dollar amount between $300-$500 allows for more scholarships to be awarded to a greater number of graduates, says Ann Mackrill-Wilson, Dollars for Scholars Board president.
Area residents are invited to join the community-wide effort to provide scholarships for the seniors of 2007. Tax deductible contributions may be sent to Dollars for Scholars, 119 West 6th Street, Storm Lake, IA 50588. Any local service groups, business or individual interested in fully funding a scholarship can get details by calling Dean Nicholson, Awards chairman for Dollars for Scholars.
