The Buena Vista County Public Health Department gave a marathon 724 meningococcal vaccinations on Wednesday to protect Buena Vista University students from an outbreak of dangerous meningitis.
BVU health services continued to give additional vaccines and antibiotics on Thursday and Friday. The university invested as estimated cost of $100,000 for the preventative effort and 1,000 doses of vaccine.
Two cases of bacterial meningitis have been positively diagnosed. Three other students were treated for similar symptoms that have not been diagnosed as meningitis.
As of Friday, no additional cases had been reported, and no classes or university events had to be called off.
