Sioux Central escaped the first round of Class 2A district play here Tuesday night, eliminating Emmetsburg in five games.
Rebel hitter Beth Ehlers led the way at the net as she has all season, finishing with a match-high 18 kills on 35 of 47 attack efficiency. Sioux Central advanced to the district finals with a 9-25, 28-26, 25-18, 17-25 and 15-10 win.
"We started out quite slow tonight but did pick it up," Sioux Central volleyball coach Sue Mattson said. "I think we took Emmetsburg too lightly."
Other Rebel players pitched in at the net. Senior Briana Scharn added eight kills, 18 digs, 22 set assists and 22 of 23 serving with four ace serves. As a team, Sioux Central served 97 percent in beating its Lakes Conference foe.
"Emmetsburg had some good hitters and played well," Mattson said. "We just have to remember to play at our top level at all times. Once we picked up our game, we looked good."
Rebel hitter Steph Rushton finished with seven kills on 18 of 26 attacking efficiency. Brooke Scharn was 13 of 13 in serving with one ace and 18 digs, while Kerri Armstrong added 11 digs.
Melany Lovin recorded ten digs and was 10 of 10 in serving with one ace.
With the win, the Rebels advance to the district finals. They'll meet next Manson Northwest Webster next Tuesday in Emmetsburg.
"We're looking forward to playing them," Mattson said. "We know we'll have to play at our top level if we want to win."
