82 seek shelter in anti-abuse program

Thursday, October 19, 2006

The Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault (CAASA) reminds everyone that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. There theme again for the year is "If your permit it, you promote it."

During this month, CAASA will intensify their efforts to promote public awareness of domestic violence issues.

In fiscal year 2006, CAASA provided services to 474 new clients - adults and children. Of these, 39 adults and 43 children sought shelter from abusive situations, for a total of 872 nights.

CAASA serves the Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Ida, Palo Alto and Sac Counties with individual and group counseling for adults and children, crisis intervention, shelter, information and referral, multicultural outreach and therapy services.

CAASA will hold their Annual Domestic Violence 'An empty place at the Table' display at the Buena Vista County Courthouse from now through October 31. This display is in memory of those who are no longer able to join their family and friends for dinner. Also, a Candlelight Vigil Service will be held Sunday, October 29 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church, 701 E. 18th Street, Spencer. This event is an opportunity to mourn those that have died, celebrate those who have survived and connect those who have worked to end domestic violence. Anyone may attend and admission is free.

Contact CAASA's 24-hour toll free crisis line at 1-8777-363-4612 for information on how you can help.
