New lectures take seniors to India, and into Civil War

Thursday, October 12, 2006

A partnership between the Storm Lake Community Education, Iowa Central Community College and Buena Vista University will present the first Emeritus Lecture Series.

The Emeritus Lectures series is designed for those who are interested in continuing their education after retirement. A community advisory group selected the featured presentations based on their broad appeal to the public.

The first presentation will be given by Dr. Swasti Bhattacharyya, assistant professor of philosophy and religion at BVU, on Monday, Oct. 16. Her presentation, titled "Tread Lightly Upon this Earth" will highlight her summer experiences living in central India with the women of Brahma Vidya Mandir. The community is designed to provide women a place to engage in an experiment of "spiritual advancement". Dr. Bhattacharyya spent two months living with the women and practiced their principles of nonviolence and peace. Through her photographs and stories, she will share her lessons and experience.

On Monday, Nov. 13 Dr. William B. Feis, associate professor of history at BVU, will present "The American Civil War Still Lives!" Dr. Feis will cover the many fascinating aspects of the American Civil War by exploring the lives and times of the common solider. Participants will also learn about the breakdown of the Union, the battle of Bull Run and other facets of the Civil War.

The Emeritus presentations will be held at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in the Fireside Room from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the dates noted above.
